An itchy scalp is common and can have several causes. The most likely one depends on whether you also have flaking, redness, sores, hair loss, or a rash.
Main causes of an itchy scalp
- Dandruff / seborrheic dermatitis: Often causes white or yellowish flakes, itching, and sometimes greasy or red skin.
- Dry scalp: More likely with dry weather, frequent washing, hot water, or harsh hair products.
- Contact dermatitis: Shampoos, hair dyes, fragrances, oils, or styling products can trigger irritation or an allergic reaction.
- Psoriasis: Can produce thick, well-defined, silvery scales and may extend beyond the hairline.
- Fungal infection (ringworm/tinea capitis): More common in children and can cause scaling, broken hairs, swollen areas, or patches of hair loss.
- Head lice: Usually causes intense itching, particularly around the ears and back of the neck; nits may be attached to individual hairs.
- Eczema or other skin conditions: These can also affect the scalp and cause persistent itching.
What you can do
If it’s mild dandruff, an anti-dandruff shampoo containing ingredients such as ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione may help. Follow the product instructions and give it some time to work.
Avoid scratching aggressively, because damaged skin can become infected.
If the itching is severe or persistent, causes sores, pus, significant redness, or hair loss, or doesn’t improve with appropriate shampoo, a dermatologist can determine the underlying cause.
