My neighbor taught me this trick to clean green algae off siding with 0 effort. Here’s how it works

Easy Way to Clean Green Algae From Siding

If you’re talking about the common “spray it and let it do the work” trick, the basic idea is to use a cleaner that breaks down the algae and then rinse it away—rather than scrubbing every inch.

A simple approach

  1. Choose a cloudy day if possible. Direct hot sunlight can cause cleaning solutions to dry too quickly.
  2. Wet the siding with water first.
  3. Apply a siding-safe exterior cleaner according to its label. For light algae, a diluted household detergent may be sufficient.
  4. Let it sit for several minutes, but don’t allow the solution to dry on the siding.
  5. Rinse thoroughly from top to bottom with a garden hose.
  6. Repeat stubborn areas rather than aggressively scrubbing.

⚠️ Avoid a few common mistakes

  • Don’t mix bleach with ammonia, acids, or other cleaners—dangerous gases can form.
  • Test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area first.
  • Protect nearby plants by wetting them with water and rinsing them afterward.
  • Avoid excessive pressure on vinyl or painted siding; a pressure washer can force water behind the siding or damage the finish.
  • Don’t assume that “natural” cleaners are automatically harmless to plants or surfaces.

If the algae keeps returning, the underlying issue is usually persistent moisture and limited sunlight. Improving drainage, trimming vegetation, and keeping gutters functioning properly can make a bigger difference than repeatedly cleaning the siding.
