👂 “Put 2 Drops in Your Ear and You’ll Hear Like Before” — Is It True?
This is a popular claim online, but two drops of a particular oil or homemade remedy cannot reliably restore hearing. Hearing loss has many possible causes, and treatment depends on the cause.
When drops might help
If hearing is reduced because of impacted earwax, appropriate earwax-softening drops can sometimes help restore hearing once the wax is cleared. NHS guidance, for example, describes using a few drops of olive or almond oil for uncomplicated earwax buildup. nhs.uk+1
But that is very different from saying the drops repair hearing loss caused by the inner ear, aging, nerve damage, or other conditions.
🚨 The most important warning
If your hearing suddenly decreases over hours or a few days, particularly in one ear, don’t experiment with home remedies. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is considered a medical emergency, and delaying evaluation and appropriate treatment can reduce the chance of recovery. NIDCD+1
Sudden hearing loss accompanied by severe dizziness, facial weakness, difficulty speaking, or other neurological symptoms requires emergency assessment.
❌ Avoid putting random mixtures in your ear
Don’t put homemade preparations, essential oils, garlic mixtures, alcohol, vinegar, or other substances into your ear without appropriate medical advice. Ear drops also aren’t appropriate for everyone—for example, some should not be used when the eardrum may be perforated. nidirect+1
Bottom line: If the problem is earwax, suitable drops may help. If the hearing loss comes from the inner ear or nerves, two drops won’t “bring your hearing back.” The safest first step is having the ear examined and determining the actual cause.
