6 Foods That Can Help Support Muscle Growth 💪

Building muscle isn’t just about protein—the body also needs enough calories, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Combined with regular resistance training, these foods can support muscle growth and recovery.

  1. Eggs 🥚 — A convenient source of high-quality protein and essential amino acids.
  2. Chicken or lean meat 🍗 — Rich in protein and provides nutrients such as iron and zinc.
  3. Greek yogurt 🥛 — Provides protein, calcium, and other nutrients important for muscle and bone health.
  4. Fish 🐟 — Salmon, tuna, and other fish provide protein; fatty fish also provide omega-3 fats.
  5. Beans and lentils 🫘 — Plant-based sources of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, iron, and other nutrients.
  6. Nuts and seeds 🥜 — Provide protein, healthy fats, calories, and minerals; they’re especially useful when you need more energy in your diet.

The key to gaining muscle

Eating these foods alone won’t build substantial muscle. Progressive resistance training + adequate protein + enough total calories + good sleep are the foundation.

If you’re trying to gain muscle, spreading protein across meals can be a practical strategy. For many adults who exercise regularly, roughly 1.2–1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight per day is a reasonable target, although individual needs vary.
