The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

If you mean the popular headline “5 drinks that are most harmful to your bones,” the evidence is more nuanced. There aren’t five specific drinks that doctors universally classify as “bone-damaging.” The bigger issue is excessive consumption and what those drinks replace in your diet.

🦴 5 drinks worth limiting

  1. Cola and other soft drinks
Frequent cola consumption has been associated with lower bone mineral density in some studies, particularly in women. This doesn’t prove that carbonation itself weakens bones.
  2. Heavy alcohol consumption
Excessive alcohol can interfere with bone formation and calcium regulation and increases the risk of falls and fractures.
  3. Large amounts of caffeinated coffee
Moderate coffee intake generally isn’t a major concern. Very high caffeine intake can modestly increase calcium losses, particularly when calcium intake is low.
  4. Energy drinks
Many contain substantial caffeine and sugar. Regularly consuming them instead of nutritious beverages isn’t ideal for maintaining bone health.
  5. Sugary drinks in general
Sweetened fruit drinks, sweet teas and other sugar-heavy beverages can displace nutrient-rich foods and drinks from the diet. They are best kept occasional rather than making up a large proportion of daily fluid intake.

Better choices for your bones

Choose water, milk or calcium-fortified alternatives most often, and make sure your diet provides adequate calcium, vitamin D and protein. Weight-bearing and resistance exercise are also important for maintaining bone strength.

At 83, preventing falls is especially important because a fall can result in a serious fracture even when bone density isn’t severely reduced. If you have osteoporosis, a previous fracture, or concerns about your bone health, ask your doctor whether you need a bone-density (DEXA) assessment and whether calcium/vitamin D intake is adequate.
