8 Plants that Help Repel Mice, Spiders & Other Insects

8 plants that may help repel mice, spiders & insects 🌿

Some strongly scented plants contain compounds that may discourage certain pests, but there is an important caveat: simply placing a plant in your home generally isn’t a reliable way to eliminate an established infestation.

1. Peppermint 🌱

Its strong menthol scent may discourage some insects. For mice, however, peppermint plants aren’t a dependable control method.

2. Lavender đź’ś

Its fragrance may deter some insects, particularly moths, although its effectiveness varies.

3. Rosemary

Aromatic rosemary contains compounds with insect-repellent properties and is useful as a kitchen herb as well.

4. Basil

Basil’s aromatic oils may help discourage some flying insects. Growing it near sunny windows can be convenient.

5. Mint

Mint has a strong aroma that some insects find unpleasant. Keep it in a pot, because it can spread aggressively when planted directly in the garden.

6. Lemongrass

Lemongrass contains aromatic compounds related to those found in citronella and may help discourage mosquitoes.

7. Marigolds 🌼

Marigolds are commonly planted around gardens because their scent and plant compounds may affect certain insects, although they aren’t a universal insect repellent.

8. Catnip

Catnip contains nepetalactone, a compound that has demonstrated insect-repellent activity in scientific research.

What about mice and spiders?

For mice, plants are unlikely to solve an infestation. More effective measures include sealing holes and gaps, removing accessible food, and using appropriate traps.

For spiders, reducing the insects they feed on, sealing entry points, and removing clutter can be more effective than relying on plants.

Also remember that “natural” doesn’t automatically mean harmless. Some plants are toxic to pets or children, and concentrated essential oils can be hazardous if swallowed or used improperly.

If you tell me which pest you’re dealing with—mice, spiders, mosquitoes, cockroaches, or ants—I can give you the most effective home-control methods.
