10 Important Side Effects of Metoprolol That You Need to Know

10 Important Side Effects of Metoprolol

Metoprolol is a beta blocker commonly used for high blood pressure, angina, certain heart-rhythm problems, and some forms of heart failure. Many people tolerate it well, but side effects are possible.

Common or important effects

  1. Tiredness or fatigue — especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose.
  2. Dizziness or lightheadedness — particularly when standing up quickly.
  3. Slow heart rate (bradycardia) — metoprolol intentionally slows the heart, but an excessively slow rate can be problematic.
  4. Low blood pressure — may cause weakness, dizziness, or fainting.
  5. Cold hands and feet — reduced circulation to the extremities can sometimes make them feel cold.
  6. Shortness of breath — can occur and deserves attention, particularly in someone with asthma or another lung condition.
  7. Sleep problems or vivid dreams — some people experience insomnia or unusual dreams.
  8. Depressed mood or reduced energy — mood changes can occur in some people.
  9. Sexual difficulties — decreased libido or erectile problems are possible.
  10. Worsening heart-failure symptoms — unusual weight gain, increasing swelling, or worsening breathlessness should be reported promptly.

🚨 Don’t stop metoprolol suddenly

This is particularly important if you take it for a heart condition. Abruptly stopping a beta blocker can cause a rapid increase in heart rate and blood pressure and may worsen angina or increase cardiovascular risk. Your clinician can tell you how to taper it safely when discontinuation is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical attention for fainting, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, or a very slow/irregular heartbeat accompanied by weakness or dizziness.

Also, if you’re taking metoprolol and notice new symptoms, don’t automatically assume they’re caused by the medication—your underlying heart condition or another medicine could be responsible.
