5 colors to avoid after 50: they can dull your glow

5 Colors You May Want to Rethink After 50 🎨

There are no colors you need to avoid simply because you’re over 50. What matters more is your skin undertone, hair color, contrast level, and personal style. That said, some shades can make certain complexions look washed out or tired.

Five colors that may be less flattering for some people are:

  1. Dull beige — especially when it closely matches your skin tone; it can make your complexion look flat.
  2. Muddy olive — can emphasize yellow or sallow undertones in some complexions.
  3. Very pale gray — may reduce contrast around the face and make some skin tones appear washed out.
  4. Yellowish brown — mustard and ochre can look harsh against certain undertones.
  5. Faded, dusty pastels — very low-contrast shades can sometimes make the face appear less vibrant.

✨ The better rule

Don’t eliminate a color just because of your age. Move it away from your face if it isn’t flattering—try it in trousers, skirts, shoes, or accessories—and choose a brighter or deeper version near your face.

For example, if pale gray washes you out, try charcoal; if beige looks dull, try cream or camel; if a muted pastel doesn’t work, try a clearer, richer version of the same color.
