That viral claim is partly true but exaggerated. Baking soda can help loosen grease, but there isn’t one preparation that’s safe for every surface.
🧽 Simple grease-cutting paste
Mix:
-
3 tablespoons baking soda
-
1 tablespoon water
-
A few drops of dishwashing liquid
Stir until you have a thick paste.
-
Apply a thin layer to the greasy surface.
-
Leave it for 5–10 minutes.
-
Gently scrub with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth.
-
Wipe thoroughly with clean water.
-
Dry the surface.
Where it can work
This can be useful for stovetops, greasy cabinet surfaces, and some appliance exteriors, provided the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.
⚠️ Don’t use it blindly
Baking soda can scratch or dull polished finishes, some stainless steel, aluminum, natural stone, and nonstick coatings. Test an inconspicuous area first.
Never mix cleaning products with bleach, ammonia, or other chemicals.
For stubborn grease, dishwashing detergent is actually doing much of the grease-cutting work; baking soda mainly adds mild abrasive cleaning power.
