Taking A Spoonful Of Honey Before Sleeping: How Does It Work?

Taking a Spoonful of Honey Before Sleeping is a popular home remedy, but its effects are more modest than many: Does It Really Help?

A spoonful of honey before bed is a popular home remedy, but its effects are more modest than many viral claims suggest. Honey is primarily sugar, so it shouldn’t be viewed as a treatment for insomnia, disease, or other medical conditions.

Potential effects include:

  • Soothing a cough: Honey can coat and soothe an irritated throat and may reduce nighttime coughing, particularly during upper-respiratory infections. It should never be given to children under 1 year old because of the risk of infant botulism.

  • A small carbohydrate boost: Honey provides readily available carbohydrates, but there isn’t good evidence that a bedtime spoonful reliably improves sleep in healthy adults.

  • Throat comfort: If your throat feels dry or irritated at night, honey mixed into warm water or tea may feel soothing.

What about blood sugar?

Honey still raises blood glucose because it contains substantial amounts of sugar. People with diabetes or blood-sugar problems should account for it as part of their overall carbohydrate intake rather than assuming it’s a “healthy sugar” that doesn’t affect glucose.

Also remember that frequent sugary foods or drinks before bed can contribute to tooth decay.

So, if you enjoy a small amount of honey before bed, it’s generally fine for most adults, but there’s no special nighttime mechanism that makes honey a cure-all.
