Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

🍌 Make Bananas Last Longer With One Simple Storage Change

If you’re referring to the viral “one kitchen item” banana-storage trick, the item is usually plastic wrap.

The idea is to wrap the banana stems/crown tightly with plastic wrap. Bananas naturally produce ethylene gas, which contributes to ripening. Covering the crown can reduce ethylene exposure around the stems and may slow ripening somewhat.

An easy method

  1. Keep the bananas together or separate them into individual fruits.
  2. Wrap the top/stem area tightly with a small piece of plastic wrap.
  3. Keep unripe bananas at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat.
  4. Once they’re at your preferred ripeness, refrigerate them. The peel may turn brown, but the flesh can remain good for several more days.
  5. Check for mold, leaking, or a fermented smell and discard spoiled fruit.

But will they really last 10 days longer?

Don’t count on a guaranteed 10-day extension. Ripening depends on temperature, banana variety, maturity when purchased, and storage conditions. Wrapping the stems may help, but it isn’t a magic preservation method.

And if you want the simplest approach: buy bananas at different stages of ripeness and refrigerate them once ripe. That’s often more useful than relying on a viral kitchen hack.
