8 Signs Your Blood Sugar May Be Too High
“Too much sugar in your body” usually refers to high blood glucose (hyperglycemia). Symptoms alone can’t confirm it—the best way to know is to measure your blood glucose.
Possible signs include:
-
Increased thirst — high glucose can cause fluid loss through increased urination.
-
Frequent urination, including waking repeatedly at night.
-
Increased hunger or feeling unsatisfied after eating.
-
Unusual fatigue or weakness.
-
Blurred vision.
-
Dry mouth or dehydration.
-
Slow-healing cuts or frequent infections, particularly when glucose has been elevated for a prolonged period.
-
Unexplained weight loss — especially when accompanied by marked thirst and urination, this can be a sign of significant hyperglycemia.
What to do
If you have these symptoms, consider getting your blood glucose and HbA1c checked rather than trying to diagnose yourself from symptoms. If you already have diabetes, follow your prescribed monitoring and treatment plan.
Reduce sugary drinks and highly refined foods, choose more vegetables, legumes, whole grains and protein, and stay physically active as appropriate.
Seek urgent medical care if very high glucose is accompanied by vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, severe dehydration, fruity-smelling breath, or deep/rapid breathing, as these can be signs of diabetic ketoacidosis.
If you tell me your age and whether you have diabetes, I can explain which blood-sugar tests and ranges are relevant to you.
