This natural and effective remedy for relieving constipation

If you’re asking about a natural remedy for constipation, one of the better-supported options is prunes (dried plums) or prune juice.

Why it can help

Prunes contain fiber and sorbitol, a naturally occurring sugar alcohol that draws water into the bowel and can help make stools easier to pass.

Other helpful measures include:

  • Drink enough fluids throughout the day.

  • Increase fiber gradually through fruits, vegetables, beans, oats, and whole grains.

  • Stay physically active, such as taking a daily walk.

  • Don’t ignore the urge to have a bowel movement.

  • If needed, psyllium fiber can be an effective option when taken with plenty of water.

Avoid aggressive “detox” drinks or large amounts of oils. They aren’t necessary for ordinary constipation and can cause diarrhea or other problems.

If constipation is persistent, recurrent, or accompanied by blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or inability to pass gas, get medical advice.
