Why is it so important not to flush the toilet after every trip to the toilet to urinate?

Should You Avoid Flushing After Every Urination?

There is no general health recommendation to stop flushing the toilet after urinating. The idea that you should routinely leave urine in the toilet to “save your kidneys” or improve your health is not supported.

If anything, flushing after urination is the hygienic choice, particularly in a shared bathroom.

Why flushing matters

  • Reduces odors and keeps the bathroom cleaner.

  • Removes microorganisms and waste from the toilet bowl.

  • Helps prevent buildup of mineral deposits and residue.

  • With a toilet lid, flushing can help reduce—but doesn’t completely eliminate—the spread of droplets/aerosols.

What about saving water?

If your concern is water conservation, you can consider a dual-flush or water-efficient toilet rather than routinely leaving urine sitting in the bowl.

A common saying is “If it’s yellow, let it mellow.” That’s a water-saving practice, not a medical recommendation. If you choose to use it in a private bathroom, regular cleaning and good ventilation become more important.

Bottom line: You don’t need to avoid flushing after urinating for health reasons. Flush normally, and use water-efficient plumbing if your goal is to reduce water consumption.
