Doctor Uncovers A Telltale Sign In Your Fingernails That May Predict Your Life Expectancy

A Doctor Explains What Your Fingernails May Reveal About Your Health

Your fingernails can sometimes provide clues about your overall health—but they aren’t a crystal ball for predicting how long you’ll live.

Changes such as unusual discoloration, persistent ridges, thickening, separation from the nail bed, or changes in shape can occasionally be associated with nutritional deficiencies, infections, skin conditions, or other medical problems.

One particularly noticeable change is clubbing, in which the fingertips become enlarged and the nails curve more around the fingertips. Clubbing can sometimes be associated with underlying heart or lung conditions and deserves medical evaluation.

That doesn’t mean a particular nail appearance tells you your life expectancy. Nail changes are clues, not predictions. If you notice a new or persistent change in your nails—especially when it occurs alongside symptoms such as shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, pain, or swelling—it’s worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Your nails may offer useful information about your health, but the best way to understand what they mean is through a proper medical evaluation rather than an online prediction.
