Clear your throat and lungs of mucus with this recipe – just 2 ingredients

🌿 Clear Mucus From Your Throat and Lungs With This 2-Ingredient Recipe?

You may see recipes claiming that two ingredients can “clean” mucus out of your lungs. Be careful with that wording: no home drink can literally detox or cleanse your lungs. Your airways naturally clear mucus through coughing and the normal action of tiny airway hairs.

However, a simple drink can soothe an irritated throat and make thick mucus feel easier to clear.

🍯 A simple 2-ingredient option

Honey + warm water

  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 cup of warm water

Stir and sip slowly.

Honey can help soothe cough and throat irritation. Warm fluids can also make thick secretions feel less uncomfortable.

Never give honey to a child under 1 year old because of the risk of infant botulism.

💧 Other things that may help

  • Drink enough fluids throughout the day.
  • Use a saline nasal spray or rinse if postnasal drip is contributing to the mucus.
  • Take a warm shower to help loosen secretions temporarily.
  • Avoid cigarette smoke, vaping, and other airway irritants.
  • Don’t repeatedly forcefully clear your throat, which can increase irritation.

If you use a nasal rinse, use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled and cooled water, not ordinary tap water.

🚨 When mucus shouldn’t be treated at home

Get urgent medical attention for significant difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue or gray lips, confusion, or coughing up a substantial amount of blood.

If mucus or coughing persists for several weeks, keeps returning, or is accompanied by persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, wheezing, or worsening breathlessness, arrange a medical evaluation.

Bottom line

A honey-and-warm-water drink may soothe your throat, but it isn’t a lung “cleanse” or a cure for the underlying cause of chronic mucus. Persistent phlegm is best addressed by finding out why you’re producing it in the first place.
