#1 Vitamin to Eliminate Swollen Legs and Ankles

There isn’t a #1 vitamin that reliably eliminates swollen legs or ankles. Swelling (edema) is a symptom, and the treatment depends on its cause.

Common causes include

  • Standing or sitting for long periods
  • Certain medicines, including some blood-pressure drugs
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Heart, kidney, or liver problems
  • Too much dietary sodium
  • Injury or infection
  • A blood clot (DVT), particularly when swelling is sudden and mainly affects one leg

A vitamin deficiency can occasionally contribute to health problems, but taking vitamin B, C, D, or E isn’t a general treatment for ankle swelling.

What you can do

If the swelling is mild and occurs in both legs, measures such as elevating your legs, moving regularly, avoiding prolonged sitting, and reducing excess salt may help. Don’t start potassium or magnesium supplements specifically for swelling without medical advice.

🚨 Get medical attention promptly if

  • One leg suddenly becomes swollen, painful, warm or red.
  • The swelling appears suddenly or is rapidly worsening.
  • You develop shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, fainting, or severe weakness.

At 83, persistent or new ankle swelling is worth discussing with your doctor, especially if you take blood-pressure or heart medicines. Some medications commonly cause ankle swelling, and changing the medication may help—but don’t stop a prescribed medicine yourself.

If you tell me whether both ankles are swollen, how long this has been happening, and what medicines you take, I can help you narrow down the likely causes.
